HTML5: the future for online corporate communications

On 27 June 2012, The Group (I work for them) and Communicate magazine hosted a seminar on HTML5 and its potential for transforming online communications in the 'post-PC' world. Here are some of the highlights.

Andrew Betts (FT Labs)

The FT's web app has over one million users and has significantly boosted mobile and tablet traffic ? FT.com sees 20% of its traffic coming directly from mobiles and tablets (more here from the FT on its app). So who better to kick things off than Andrew Betts?

The FT is in the business of selling content, not papers. Native apps were not designed for publishing, often use proprietary technology and risk becoming obsolete ?whereas HTML5 is suited to the web in this 'post PC' world.

FT Labs suggest ubiquity across platforms is key in today's marketplace. #html5commsAndrew Morris

Benedict Evans (Enders Analysis)

Benedict Evans gave us the context ? with data showing, amongst other things, the explosion in smartphone and tablet sales and the growth of Android.

But what can HTML5 do? Martin Bryant pointed us to some unapologetically 'cool stuff'.

Simon Henderson (Centrica)

Centrica launched the FTSE100's first HTML5 app in April 2012.

Simon explained that, with online integral to Centrica's communications and strategy, the company recognised that it had to move with its audiences and platform developments. Access to centrica.com via tablet or mobile had been steadily increasing, with a recent sharp increase: over 8% of visits to the corporate site were from mobile, 5% from iPads.

The Group worked with Centrica on the app and Andrew Rigby has blogged about the project (here's his take).

Cathal Smyth (The Group)

Cathal first took a step back to see how we got to where we arein online corporate communication in 2012. He then looked at some of the challenges that will keep us occupied over the next years ? social media, multiple devices, corporate silos, content is king (again) and reporting ? and the role that HTML5 might play.

He concluded that HTML5 is an enable of better web sites and online experiences. And that it will allowus ? or maybe in some cases force us ? to concentrate on our main role, communication.

Here are Cathal's slides

Here's a write up from Paul Greenwood on The Group blog: Seminar lifts the lid on HTML5
